The Department of Emergency and Organ Transplantation of the Bari's University is located at the Policlinico. It is constituted by eleven sections which have the primary goal of performing basic and clinical research in transplantation, particularly on the kidney, liver, heart and pancreas. This
research is carried out in collaboration with extramural structures such as
universities, multinational pharmaceutical companies, small and medium sized
enterprises manufacturing biotecnology applied to devices, artificial organs,
prostheses and tissues, and enterprises involved in informatics for the
transmission of data and images. Moreover, a static telepathology and image
analysis service is available through the INTERNET. The Department has
stipulated agreements with European and North-American Universities to exchange
research programs for scientific collaborations supported by private and public,
national and international institutions. The research activity is also directed
to improve professional education for medical students, residents and phylosophy
doctors. Each section of the Department develops specific scientific,
educational and clinical aspects of their branch. Great attention has recently
been given to oncology: active clinical work is performed in medical and
surgical therapy of tumours. Some research programs are based on modern
therapeutic approaches such as: immunotherapy and vaccines.
